scotland street school from Jodie

On Monday I went to Scotland Street School. It was really scary! Our teacher was so strict! She wrote the date on the main board, it was: 4th of June 1887.

First we went to get dressed in our costumes. The girls had to wear a white frilly dress. The boys had to wear a collar and waistcoat.

Then we went to line up, girls came out of their dressing room and had to line up tallest to smallest. Boys did the same.

Then we went outside the classroom. The boys were already there. We had to put our right hand up in the air and place it on the shoulder of the person in front of you. This was to get our distant. Then we put our hand down and the teacher came out.

She seemed nice at first but to groups of 2 went in and she yelled at the top of her voice “DON’T TOUCH ANTTHING ON YOUR DESK!” And everyone jumped back! We had to sit at a desk for 2 people only, a boy and a girl.

Everyone went in and there was 3 girls left, so the 2 girls in front of me sat next to each other and I was left by myself (I hated being the tallest at that point, the rest of the time it’s good) She told me I had to sit by my self behind the two girls in front of me.

The first thing we done was chant our times tables which we are all good at but I was so nervous. We had to say them up to 12. Then she went around to the blackboard and there was a clock face.

In the middle she put a number for example times3. then she round the class and pointed to a number on the clock face. When it got to my turn I felt really scared that I might forget the answer.

After that we looked at another board, which had the alphabet on it. She pointed to a letter on the board and you had to put up your hand and if she choose you, you had to stand up and say a boys name, a girls name or an animals name that begin with the same letter and after that you had to say mam after you said the name e.g. “a- Albert, mam.” Then we had to write the alphabet, IN VICTORIAN WRITING! It was so hard.

Then she said she was going to ring a bell and we would go back to being 2007 children. When she rang the bell everyone relaxed and started to laugh. Then she rang the bell again after explaining.

Then she went to being a janitor. He gave us a health lesson. We had to get up and do start jumps. That’s really all I can remember about when she was a janitor.
Then she rang the bell again and everyone got up and went back to the dressing room to get changed again.
